Talking Points With Mayor Pete

We’re all about helping people understand what the Democratic party is all about. Lately, one of its most popular spokesmen has been “Mayor Pete” Buttigieg. Most of us got to know him during 2019 and early 2020, when he threw his hat into the ring as a Democratic presidential candidate. We all know Joe Biden ended up winning that race, but Mayor Pete has consistently showed up to do battle on Biden’s behalf. If you haven’t seen his recent appearances on FOX…well you should.

Earlier in the week, Mayor Pete hosted an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit, where he took questions from a varied audience. Generally, it’s a good look at how many Democrats perceive what’s going on. We recommend you read the whole thing here, but we’ve provided some takeaways:

  • His take on ACB’s confirmation, “…by Senators nominated by a minority of the American people, put forward by a president who lost the popular vote, in a process that the majority of Americans believe should not take place before the results of the election are known.”
  • How to talk to those who have fallen deep into the Qanon rabbit hole: “Think of someone you love, or like, in your life – who is also taken in by these disturbing conspiracy theories or radical right politics. If you pause to think of their best qualities (their loyalty to friends, perhaps, or work ethic, or whatever is best about the individual you have in mind) it helps you remember that they are not wholly defined by subscribing to a disturbing worldview–and can perhaps be coaxed out of it.”
  • The importance of local politics: “Local government is often less ideological, almost always less partisan, and typically more accountable to basic facts and truths, than what we see in national politics. Of course, the best local officials or mayors in the world can only get so much done when national politics is broken.”

Thank you, Mayor Pete, for helping all of us stay in the loop and conveying clear, concise explanations of Democratic ideals – even to those who might not usually be listening.
